cow, owl, and dove

i wanted to take the time,
to say happy birthday to you.
even though it's late,
and my lateness I rue.
you see, though, I was distracted,
by a cow that went moo.
detained by a wise owl
who cried who who.
i wanted to give you, my friend,
a dove- coo, coo.
but I didn't know whether
to give old or new.
so since I really didn't
know what to do.
I finally gave up and
gave what i knew.
this poem, and all my love
I give, to you.

for rachel:
p.s. i figured out the rest of your present, darling. pick a concert and I'll at least help you buy the ticket and go with you.

clarity

there is something to be said
about the clarity that exhaustion brings
artificial or natural, it feels the same
there is no grey, just black and white
just here or there and none between
and decisions are easily made
when they are in front of you
and only one path is clear
the only tough part
is getting up the strength

"I hang my coat up in the first bar
There is no peace that I've found so far
The laughter penetrates my silence
As drunken men find flaws in science"
- snow patrol, set fire to the third bar

you

i've found that there is only one thing
that isn't gonna change with time and mood and love
there is only one thing
that isn't going to come and go away
there is only one thing
that isn't gonna disappoint me
and that's you

constitutional

the supreme court of mary ellen has decided that due to the fact that mary ellen both has a compelling interest in maintaining her sanity and has a plan that is narrowly tailored to accomplish that, it is constitutional for mary ellen to not do all her homework

signals

if you are going to send signals,
do me a favor and don't mix them

fly

fingers fly fleetly across the flowing keys
rhythms arrive, leave again
trilling birds perch nearby
then dive into the depths of excitement
slowly now, easy, breathe once more,
before pounding pulsing beats will come
fear played out, horror turned sound
until the peace comes, the ease
quickly our hearts beat, slowly come words
and the final note sounds

Christy-Catherine Marshall

"You're sensitive, Christy. So am I. You want to know why seeing stark evil hasn't made me rough or bitter?...Remember I said it was God who was prying the little girl's hands off her eyes. As if he were saying, 'I can't use ivory-tower followers. They're plaster of paris, they crumble and fall apart in life's press. So you've got to see life the way it really is before you can do anything about evil. You cannot vanquish it. I can. But in My world the battle against evil has to be a joint endeavor. You and Me. I, God, in you , can have victory every time.' After that, He was always right there beside me, looking at the dreadful sights with compassion and love and heartbreak. His caring and His love were too real for bitterness to grow in me."
...
"We were talking a while ago about running back to our ivory tower. You see, Christy, evil is real- and powerful. It has to be fought, not explained away, not fled. And God is against evil all the way. So each of us has to decide where we stand, how we're going to live our lives. We can try and persuade ourselves that evil doesn't exist; live for ourselves and wink at evil. We can say that it isn't so bad after all, maybe even try to call it fun by clothing it in silks and velvets. We can compromise with it, keep quiet about it and say it's none of our business. Or we can work on God's side, listen for his orders on strategy against the evil, no matter how horrible it is, and know that He can transform it."

sound familiar?

worth it.
this is when it isn't worth it,
what this'll do for me.
late at night,
running low on interest,
fuel and sleep.
this is when
all that information
you pump into me
means nothing.
do you know that's why i'm here,
simply for what it'll get me.
not because i like it,
not because it's fun,
but because it's 'best'
at least thats what they say,
but now it doesn't seem so,
and i wonder if it will ever be the same

doors

the state of the union is disunion now
the state of the state isn't great
the state of the city is corruption and fear
the state of this place is disgrace

the state of the school
is to be sick and cruel
to all who walk
through its doors

and the state of this room
is horror and doom
and i'm beginning
to become immune
